Rat Facts

~Rats are extremely social creatures and thrive of eachothers company.

~Rats have poor vision, sometimes you will see a red or pink eyed rat weave its head from side to side, this is so they can better judge how close or far away something is.

~Rats dont have thumbs.

~Cedar and pine are toxic to rats, and should not be used in their bedding materials.

~Red discharge from a rat's nose or eyes is usually porphyrin, not blood. It is produced in glands behind the rat's eyes. Overproduction of this discharge can be caused by stress or illness.

~Rats don't have tonsils.

~A happy or content rat will grind its teeth. Because of this "Bruxing" it may appear that the rats eyes are vibrating, caused by the lower jawbone pressing the backs of the eyes.

~Rats can't vomit

~Rats don't have gallbladders.

~The fleas that the rats carried are what really spread the black plague, not the rats themselves.

~Respiratory problems are the most common health issue for pet rats. A baterium called Mycoplasma Pulmonis "Myco" is carried by almost all rats. Some rats can go through their whole lives without any signs and others may need medication to beat any Myco flare ups.

~Rats have been known to live from 2-7 years old.

~When a rat starts to overheat, blood flow to their tails increases, allowing heat to be released.

~Rats can become sexually mature at 5 weeks old and should be seperated from opposites sexes at that time.

~A rats gestation period is about 3 weeks

~The rats largest rodent relative is the south american capybara. An adult can weigh as much as a human.
