Pathetic excuses for getting another rat Ever brought home a new rat and had to explain yourself to your partner/parents/friend? Here's some ideas for next time. 1. One of my current rats is a loner and needed a friend. 2. I needed just one more to even out my odd rat numbers 3. He followed me home, I swear! 4. I had too much empty cage space... it needed filling 5. I don't have a <insert specific marking / colour> rat yet! 6. But <insert innocent friend's name> got one! 7. I had some spare cash on me 8. I didn't realise he'd fallen asleep in my backpack! 9. I couldn't leave him there with all those other rats - they bit! 10. It's not a new rat, I've always had that one, you just haven't noticed him before 11. My vet bills were affordable this month, I can afford another rat 12. I haven't hurled a sock at the cage in weeks, I need to add a new rat to the mix 13. I get a discount rate if I buy Baytril by the gallon 14. Another rat will only add 300 additional grams of biomass to my existing pets. Everyone added together still weighs MUCH less than the neighbor's single German Shepherd. 15. I'm feeling maternal 16. This rat isn't for ME, it's for the KIDS! Check out more cute rat stuff like this at The Dapper Rat! |

Available Babies
These are my precious grandratties. All of them are super sweet, friendly and most love to kiss/lick you. Individual baby pictures are placed on the site when the babies are between 2-3 weeks of age. I will then send out an email to everyone on our mailing list to notify them that they are able to choose their babies. Non refundable deposits are accepted at this time and are needed to ensure that you get the rats you want. When someone shows interest in a baby, that rat will have "On Hold" next to their picture, this means that we are waiting for a deposit. Rats will only display "On Hold" for 5 days which is more than enough time to either send a deposit or drop it off to us. Once we have a deposit then that baby is "Reserved" and the new owners name will be below their picture. Babies are able to go to their new homes at 5 weeks of age. Please make arrangements to pick up your rats within 1 week of their available date *or for older babies/adults within 1 week of us receiving your deposit* or you will lose your deposit and the rats will become available again. Of course we will notify you several times before this happens. The reason why we use this system is because there are people that back down on adoptions and after the babies get older they are much harder to adopt out. Feel free to email us if you have any questions or concerns.
If you are interested in adopting rats please send us an email including at least the following information:
Your name, age and location If you currently have rats or have you in the past? If you have rats, how many do you have and what sexes are they? If you breed or plan to?
Please know that answering these questions makes it easier for me to get to know adopters more. Since I have several people inquiring about rats every other day or so I wont get confused about whom im speaking with if I have some basic information about them. I do not require a long application to be filled out, proof of income, social security number or blood type (he-he) however Its nice to develop some sort of relationship with my adopters. Just in case you are wondering why I dont require forms to be filled out its because I believe that they are only useful when notarized, legal and the breeder plans to take legal action against an adopter. I personally have a family and lead a very busy life and I can honestly say that I cant see myself taking legal action against someone that violated a rat adoption contract and spending a load of money and time to do so. Dont get me wrong, there will be repercussions If I found out that foul play was going on and I would contact the authorities if I ever found that my rats were being neglected or abused because thats a totally different story. Most breeders will ask that you sign a contract knowing they have no intentions of prosecuting adopters to the fullest extent of the law. If your going to do something, you should stand behind what you believe in. Dont just do it because you see others doing it.
Rats are like potato chips, you can't have just one! Sorry, no reputable rat breeder or rescue will adopt out a single rat unless you have rats at home. Rats are extremely social creatures and thrive off eachothers company. Two rats are no harder to care for than one, they will still bond with you and its proven that they live happier, healthier, and longer lives with company. There is just no way that a human can replace the companionship of another rat no matter how much time you spend with them.

Please Read! Before you adopt rats from us please understand that you are making a commitment to those creatures for the rest of their lives. Your rats will look to you for healthy food, spacious and clean cages, veterinary care if needed and most importantly love and attention. Always remember that we have an outside life, a job, school, friends, family, and other priorities that make our lives complete however YOU are all that your rats have. If by chance you cannot keep your big apple rats at any point of their lives, please let us know. We will take them back or help you find a good home for them. My worst fear is that one of my babies are taken to a pet store or worse.
New rat checklist
* Living quarters (cages are prefered and offer more space and options) * Food (homemade diets recommended) * Food bowl and water bottle * Aspen or recycled newspaper bedding * Hammock (they LOVE to sleep and lounge in them)
These items meet just the basic needs. Feel free to add other things to keep your rats happy and stimulated.

Note to breeders! While i have no problem doing business with responsible breeders in other states, i choose not to adopt out my rats to people who intend to breed in the area. Good homes are hard to come by and if there are a couple breeders in one area it becomes too hard to place everyones babies. Its also wise to check for local rescues so you dont interfere with what they are trying to do. This is something that i considered before i decided to breed and so should any breeder. Breeders that wish to do business with us must share similar values and breeding practices. References, breeder referals and or club/org memberships mean nothing to us, if you dont treat your rats as part of your family. We are always happy to answer any questions or share our findings with other breeders like ourselves so we can together improve the fancy. Feel free to contact us if your interested in knowing more about a particular rats line, we use the breeders assistant program for our pedigrees and the info is not only stored on our computer but we keep written records as well. | |||||
